Systems Administrator

Full Time - Oxford, UK

Apply now

We’re looking for a Systems Administrator to take the next step in their career and manage our server infrastructure and network at our Adestra Headquarters in Oxford, to ensure the security and availability of the infrastructure supporting our email marketing platform.

The Role

As a Systems Administrator here at Adestra you’ll work with the Systems team to ensure the platform for our MessageFocus product is maintained and developed. Uptime is key in our world, where we have a high SLA for our customers.

Workload is a mixture of maintenance and projects; while we have to maintain the platform, we also want to advance our systems with newer technologies and tools. Adestra is growing putting us in a fantastic position to make the changes needed to ensure the team futureproofs our platform.

The Systems team works closely with the Platform Development team to assist with requirements and deployments for changes in the platform code, and also handles internal escalations from other teams. This role is not customer facing as a general rule, however you can expect to have engagement with a customer by email/phone/meeting if requested by the Account Managers.

You will participate in an on-call rota, currently for a period of 1 week at a time. This is only internal alerts/escalations. Specifics of the on-call setup can be covered during the interview process.

Primary Technologies

  • UNIX operating systems (FreeBSD/CentOS)
  • Databases (PostgreSQL)
  • Mail (PowerMTA/Exim/Postfix)
  • HTTP/HTTPS (NGINX/Varnish/lighttpd/Apache)
  • Juniper/Cisco networking

About You

We want you to share the company values and apply them to all aspects of your work. Our Systems Administrators need to take pride in the work they’re doing and thrive on challenges in a high-pressure environment. Strong communication is key in the team, and therefore you will be effective in communicating within the team and the rest of the business.

Specifically, you’ll have demonstrable experience with a UNIX-like system and large volume email sending and issue mitigation. You’ll also have a solid understanding of database systems (PostgreSQL/MySQL/MariaDB) and basic networking experience. Knowledge of load balancing solutions (haproxy/nginx) and the ability to write scripts to assist with tasks and automation (bash/python) are essential.

Desirable skills include experience with PostgreSQL HA clusters, config management (puppet/ansible/chef), advanced network knowledge (switching/routing/firewalling), ZFS experience and centralised authentication (LDAP/Active Directory/RADIUS).
