Using SMS is an effective way to encourage people to make a donation, as it is quick and easy, with relatively little effort to the donator.
How does it work?
The donator sends an SMS message containing a key word to a shortcode number in order to donate a pre-defined value. For example as part of Wood Green Animal Shelters Christmas appeal they have asked people to text the keyword “˜HUNGRY’ to a shortcode number 70003 in order to make a donation of £3, which will feed one of the animals in their care for 2 days.
In return the donator receives a message thanking them for their donation. The donators mobile network will charge the donator and then pass the donation on (depending on the network operator a small fee is taken).
The majority of people always carry their mobile phone on them, making it a convenient way of donating. Wood Green advertised on trains between Huntingdon and London King Cross, catching commuters on the way to work and back, when they had a spare couple of seconds to make a donation.
Wood Green are extremely happy with the donations via SMS, which so far have generated over £1,500 In donations, as well as encouraging over 14% of SMS donators to donate on a regular basis.
