How has mobile email affected recipients open behaviour?
Have you ever wondered what percentage of your opens are exclusively on a mobile device? We’ve had an in-depth look at our email client reporting statistics to show you how mobile email has affected the way recipients are opening emails. This data is aggregated across our whole client base from 1st April 2012 up to 28th January 2013, and presents a true picture across all of our clients sectors.
Mobile usage data
The graph below shows the analysis of all email opens across the Adestra client base. Interestingly, it shows that 73% of emails were opened exclusively on desktop devices which is by far the largest audience. There are still 7% emails that are exclusively opened on mobile devices. Mobile is certainly having an impact, but the number of email opens that are happening exclusively on mobile devices is still low.
- 7% of emails were opened exclusively on mobile devices
- 73% of emails were opened exclusively on desktop devices
- The rest use a bit of both

Outlook still remains the email client upon which the most emails are being opened, followed by iPhone, Apple Mail and iPad which make up the next largest proportion. The webmail clients come next. This shows that even though mobile optimisation is most definitely important, your email must look good on all devices to ensure a good recipient experience.
- Top desktop email client: Outlook
- Top mobile email client: iPhone
- Top webmail email client: Hotmail
